Description

12th Grade Collection includes:

1. Literature and Writing: Level 4 World Literature

When it comes to language arts, much of the exceptional work that your students will accomplish is subjective in nature tied to their ideas. As we value these ideas—their discoveries from reading tied to their observations—and challenge them to catalog and craft these ideas over time, students will rise into the work of literary analysis with vim and vigor. This collection includes six novels that represent an exploration of World Literature and six student journals:

    1. The Book Thief, Markus Zusak
    2. The Cellist of Sarajevo, Steven Galloway
    3. The Elegance of the Hedgehog, Muriel Barbery
    4. Elephant Company, Vicki Constantine Croke
    5. Golden Boy, Tara Sullivan
    6. Skeletons on the Zahara, Dean King

Each week, this core  offering follows a similar weekly format with ample room for students to catalog their observations of characters, themes, symbols, motifs, and bring shape to their ideas. They will catalog rich vocabulary unique to the story, and gather quotes that exemplify themes.  At the high school level, students craft a weekly synopsis and personal reflection of that week’s reading.  For the culminating assignment, students are offered a wide range of directives to choose from, and are supported with a scaffolding upon which to craft their essay.

2. Composition: The Essay Vol. 6 – Advanced Research – Person, Place, Thing

We are so excited to release this unit that will guide 11th and 12th grade students each step of the way in the process of researching and writing a long-research paper. This creative non-fiction project is an opportunity for high school students to participate in literary writing before heading to college, trade-school, or career. While students will use the scaffolding twice (in both 11th and 12th grade), each paper will be unique depending on the topics chosen. Each year, students will choose a theme they will explore through a person, a place, and a thing. For example, our student sample explores the theme of tragedy via Abraham Lincoln, Terezin, and escalators. Another student might want to explore joy via Henri Matisse, Disneyland, and the yo-yo. Still another might tie hope to Emily Dickinson, the library, and feathers. The possibilities are endless! And because the topic is the student’s choice, and the work is scaffolded incrementally, the 30-week project is not overwhelming. Quite the contrary, students will rise into this work!

3. Operation Lexicon 12: The Ancients

A lexicon is the collected vocabulary of a person. Over the course of 26 weeks, students will explore a cluster of words from translations of ancient works. Using these words in an original way, with inspiration from  The Epic of Gilgamesh, The Iliad, The Odyssey, The Aeneid, and The Eclogues, will help the budding wordsmith recognize the plasticity of language and delight in its beauty.
