Description
Will Miss Agnes last more than a year?
Teaching the children in a one-room schoolhouse on the Alaskan frontier in 1948 is not every educator’s dream. But when Miss Agnes arrives life is never the same for the community. Fred discovers that, unlike previous teachers, Miss Agnes doesn’t mind the smell of fish. Miss Agnes stokes the fire to warm the schoolhouse each morning, wears pants, and speaks with a strange accent. Miss Agnes packs away the old textbooks, hangs up the children’s brightly colored artwork, plays opera music, and brings stories to life.

Integrated Literature & Writing Discovery Guides
Level 1 study guides are recommended for a range of primary (grades 2 and 3) students who have acquired the foundational skills to independently read and respond to a simple piece of literature. Each guide is designed to be completed in five weeks, which allows students to comfortably work through six units in a typical school year.
Not sure what level to choose? View our placement guidelines here.
Each week for four weeks, students will:
- Learn to take notes on characters, settings, and plot
- Study vocabulary
- Answer comprehension questions
- Write a short personal response
- Have opportunity to discuss topics related to the story
On the fifth week students are given a selection of hands-on projects to complete.
