A Complete Third Grade Language Arts Curriculum

Literacy is a lifelong pursuit. This collection has been curated to include everything your student needs on the 3rd grade leg of the journey.

1. Literature and Writing: Level 1 Year Pack “D”

When it comes to learning language arts much of the exceptional work that your students will accomplish is subjective in nature tied to their ideas. As we value these ideas—their discoveries from reading tied to their observations—and challenge them to catalog and craft these ideas over time, literacy skills soar. This collection represents a range of genres and six student journals:

    • The Hundred Dresses
    • The Iron Giant
    • A Mouse Called Wolf
    • The Poet’s Dog
    • Rickshaw Girl
    • The Year of Miss Agnes

Each of the six units is designed to develop increased student competency in reading, and to develop voice and writing skills over time. Our Integrated Literature and Writing Discovery Guides are tied to exceptional classic and contemporary novels.  This level is structured to guide students into the art of reading, writing and thinking.

Because 3rd grade is a milestone where students are moving beyond learning to read toward reading to learn, this collection includes Year Pack D and is just right for confident, Ready to Fly readers. This said, many children will need a bit more practice to become fluid readers. Click here to explore alternative Year Packs to substitute in an A La Carte build-your-own collection.

Each week, this core  offering follows a similar weekly format with ample room for students to catalog their observations and bring shape to their ideas. Students will read and journal on character development, setting, and plot. They will explore rich vocabulary unique to the story, and will trace the plot more deeply as they answer comprehension questions with complete sentences. In 3rd grade, the weekly paragraph is introduced. Students are supported with a simple scaffolding as they craft their response to a prompt that is connected to the week’s reading. Students will learn to move from a rough draft to a final, polished work. Each week culminates with a robust discussion.

2. Literature and Writing: Teacher Helps

Our 35 page Teacher Helps will give you all the guidance you need for success.

3. Storymaker “B”: Fairy Stories Bundle

When staring at the blank page, it’s often the first sentence that is most difficult for students to tackle.  Storymaker, complete with story starters, setting & character flashcards, and object prompts, give them the support they need to create an exciting story hook that will get the writing started! An engaging hook—the very first sentence—is all that is needed to conquer writer’s block with the swish of a pencil.

4. One True Sentence “A”: Parts of Speech Bundle

The purpose of learning the parts of speech is to explore the different roles words play in communicating ideas clearly in singular sentences. When well-crafted sentences are connected wisely, one after another, ideas grow wider and deeper. But without an understanding of basic tools of construction, meaningful communication are lost. As students practice the art of constructing sentences, they will develop skills, confidence, and creativity that will carry over to all learning.

Over the course of 25 weeks, students will construct sentences using the 8 parts of speech and, in the process, marvel at the power of words. The unit includes a student workbook and flash cards. While this unit is part of the 3rd Grade Collection, it is certainly appropriate for a precocious 2nd grade student, or an older student who needs a bit of review and can be purchased A La Carte.

5. Operation Lexicon 3: Traits of Character Bundle

Finding just the right word can be a mighty struggle for students and seasoned writers alike. Operation Lexicon: Traits of Character is a golden opportunity for students to meet the struggle head-on, while exploring the wonder of words that describe human characteristics. The English language has a plethora of words for describing people—their diverse personality, their diverse character and their diverse temperament. Each week, as they collect descriptive words, teasing out their meaning and playing with application, students will discover the astonishing potential of a singular word. Let’s dive in to the wonderful world of words!

Over the course of 10 weeks, your students will be introduced to 100 exceptional words that are exemplified by ten exceptional people. This guide can be completed in 10 weeks, one sitting per week, but can also be slowed down and completed at leisure over the course of a semester. Simply divide the tasks for each lesson. Listening
to the book twice, whether following along or not, will help the character traits settle into the accessible memory.

Each week, after listening to a story about a larger-than-life person from our video library, students will complete simple sentences using the character trait word list to describe the person being featured.

At the end of each lesson, students will color the new words on their poster so that at the end of the 10 lessons they will have a poster of 100 new words to describe people and the characters they read about in specific and wonderful ways.

    • Eleanor Roosevelt
    • Jackie Robinson
    • Martin Luther King, Jr.

In 5 short weeks, your students will walk through the process of exploring the life of a significant person from history, culminating in the crafting of an original biographical essay. Supported every step of the way by our unique scaffolding to gather facts and catalog ideas, students, inspired by larger-than-life-people who have impacted the shaping of our world, will gain bird’s eye perspective of possibility. Each of the four units is accomplished in about an hour per week over 4 weeks—2 units in the fall, 2 units in the spring.
